ARTIST STATEMENT

Artist Martha Jo Mahoney’s canvas reflects her travels across the Americas, the Far East as well as Florida landscapes where she grew up. Mahoney works with vivid colors in oil, acrylic, chalk and graphite on canvas and paper in a style influenced by modern American “abstract expressionist” painters such as Joan Mitchell, Twombly and DeKooning.

“I begin to feel complete when I am immersed in painting and drawing…working non-objectively allows me to discover and reveal emotion and mood in a vocabulary unlike verbal language.  The process itself is the subject matter of my works.  My images are derived from nature and remembered feelings of the landscape from my travels and home.”

Working quickly, continuously layering paint and medium down and pushing it with brush and hands, keeping no area sacred…always baiting accident and control.  After studying Fine Art at the University of Florida with the likes of Hiram Williams and Lenny Kesl, she moved to the northeast where she developed her style of painting around Chaddsford, PA, Princeton, NJ  and New York City.  Martha lives in Central Florida where she works out of her studio and continues her exploration of painting.

Martha’s paintings have been in many private collections.  Her work was used in the design for the Dynetech Building in downtown Orlando, Fl.  Her studio is at McRae Art Studios,  1000 Arlington St., Orlando, Fl. 32805; www.McRaeartstudios.com
